On nights of the full moon, when the fog slowly rises beneath the arcades and the ancient stones of Modena still hold the dampness of the day, there are those who swear they have seen a red figure wandering through the empty streets of the old city.
They call her “The Red Soul.”
She always appears after midnight.
A long crimson cloak, a hood hiding her face, slow footsteps that make no sound. She moves without hurry through deserted alleys, dark windows, and moonlit squares. No one knows where she comes from. No one has ever seen her arrive. She is simply there, already walking.
Legend says she was once a woman deeply in love with a man who promised he would return. A traveler. A musician, perhaps. Some say a soldier. Others, a poet. He swore he would come back before the first snowfall.
But he vanished. No letters. No explanation. Only silence.
She waited for him for years.
Then, on a winter night, she left her home wrapped in a red cloak and began searching for him through the streets of the city. She knocked on tavern doors, wandered through courtyards and inns, asking strangers, merchants, and pilgrims if they had seen the man she loved.
No one had.
And so she never stopped searching.
It is said that during every full moon, her figure slowly crosses Via Emilia, passes beneath the shadows of the Cathedral, and drifts through abandoned piazzas, staring into every corner as if hoping to recognize the face she lost among the living.
Those who encounter her speak of a faint scent of rain and withered roses.
Those who try to follow her always lose sight of her behind some narrow alley.
And those who dare call out to her hear nothing but the wind.
But the elders of Modena warn people never to look at her for too long.
Because the Red Soul is not only searching for the man who abandoned her.
She is searching for someone who still has the courage to wait.
