A Night of Sonic Poetry: CocoRosie at Cabaret Sauvage
There are concerts that you hear, and then there are performances that you experience with every sense. On July 16, 2015, under the iconic velvet and wood of Paris’s Cabaret Sauvage, I had the privilege of photographing CocoRosie. It wasn’t just a show; it was a descent into a whimsical, haunting, and beautiful underworld.
As a photographer, your goal is usually to find the "rhythm" of the light. But with the Casady sisters, you have to find the rhythm of their storytelling.
The Magic of the Unusual
The atmosphere at Parc de la Villette that night was thick with anticipation. If you’ve ever seen CocoRosie live, you know their stage is a playground of the unexpected. Between the beatboxing, the toy instruments, and the operatic trills, there is a visual texture that is incredibly rare to capture.
What struck me through the viewfinder was the contrast:
-
The Aesthetics: The eccentric costumes and theatrical makeup that felt like a surrealist painting come to life.
-
The Rawness: Amidst the harp strings and electronic beats, there were moments of profound, quiet vulnerability.
-
The Connection: The way the sisters interact on stage—a private language of glances and harmonies that the audience is lucky enough to overhear.
Framing the Dreamscape
Shooting at Cabaret Sauvage is always a treat for a photographer. The circular venue creates an intimate "magic lantern" effect, but the low, atmospheric lighting of a CocoRosie set presents a real challenge. You aren't just fighting for focus; you’re trying to capture the spirit of the sound.
I found myself leaning into the shadows, looking for those silhouettes and bursts of color that defined the night. My favorite shots aren't necessarily the ones where everything is crystal clear, but the ones that capture the motion and the mystery—the flicker of a veil or the intensity of a lyric.
More Than Just a Performance
Looking back at these frames from that summer night in Paris, I’m reminded of why I love concert photography. It’s about more than documenting a setlist; it’s about freezing a fleeting moment of pure creativity.
CocoRosie didn’t just play music that night; they built a world inside a tent in Paris. And for a few hours, we all got to live in it.
